Enhancing Learning in a Wrestling Practice Room

Enhancing Learning in a Wrestling Practice Room By Andrew Johnson, Ph.D. Mankato, Minnesota When I coached high school w restling in River Falls, Wisconsin I found that the types of learning experiences I was creating in my classroom appeared also in my wrestling practice room. Today, as a researcher and writer in areas of education and talent development, I continue to draw on my experience as a wrestling coach to help me elucidate the teaching and learning process. In this article I will describe what wrestling coaches might use from the wealth of educational research to improve the quality of learning in a wrestling practice room.

Warning About Lime Green and Vegas Gold Response Shoes

Just a quick update. One of the largest sellers of wrestling gear has been incorrectly advertising a delivery date on the Lime Green and Vegas Gold Response Shoes of December 2005 or December 15, 2005.

Keep in mind adidas/Brute Wrestling is saying they will be available in January. We will have the shoes at the same time everyone elses get them.

Keep in mind this same company did the exact same thing last year over promising the delivery date on the Teal/Pink Combat Speeds.

Camera Equipment

Several emails and comments have asked what equipment I use to take my wrestling photos. Here is the equipment with estimated costs:
  • Nikon D100 Camera Body - $1,500
  • Nikon ED AF Nikkor 80-200 mm 1:2.8 D (Camera Lense) - $1,500
  • Nikon SB-800 Speedlight (Flash) - $325
  • Lexar Compact Flash Professional 40x 1 Gig - $300

I tried to go cheap on the compact flash memory cards and it cost me. Buy the faster writing cards to make sure your images get recorded quickly and you can get ready for your next shot.

I thought it might make sense to add my camera equipment I started with. Keep in mind I am not saying Minolta equipment will not work. It is more the numbers that tell you about the equipment that means more. I suspect those of you who are getting blurry images inside (even though outside it works fine) may have similar equipment. Enough rambling, here is the equipment list:

  • Minolta Maxxum 400 si
  • Minolta camer Lense a 70-210 / 4.5 - 5.6
  • Minolta Flash 3600 HS Program D

I will do some more research to see if this camera body is sufficient for wrestling. I know the lense does not cut it. I know for me I do not like the costs of developing the film so this camera does not get much use even for family photos. I use almost exclusively digital cameras, because this way I can control the film development costs.

Camera Suggestions Picking A Camera Body Key

We have had several posts and comments and emails about the camera I use. I have gone through the same frustrations that many of you have. I had a good $800, body and lense, non-digital camera and would get a good photo every now and then. I tried buying a flash, using a mono-pod to stabilize my camera, and even a tri-pod. No such luck.

Then fortunately I went to camera store and found someone that spent some time educating me. Bascially, he said the camera body and lense I was using was not good enough to capture images indoors. The settings were not available to take a clean action shot indoors. My camera was good enough to catch out door action photos, so I assumed it would work for indoors.

Basically, I was using a "Yugo" or a "Pinto" car and expecting it to run like a race car. He gave me some options to look into. I researched the prices and found the Ritz Camera store was about the same as others. Not the cheapest, but I figured they had spent time educating me so I would shop with them.

I did stray from them, when I was looking for studio lighting set. I called a store and asked if someone would teach me how to set it up. They said something to the effect of "We don't educate our customers how to use the equipment." Keep in mind this was about a $1,000 purchase. They could have explained to me how to set it up in about 5 minutes...I went back to the Ritz Camera store.

So the point of this blog posting, get to know a local camera store where you can go and ask questions. Then research what they tell you. Also, not all Ritz camera stores are created equally. I went to a small one and got some bad advice. They sold me some slow memory cards that did not work with what I was trying to do. I now only shop at the larger super center where the staff does not change too often been going there for about 4 years now
